Why Do We Turn to Food for Comfort?

 

The neuroscience, psychology and biology behind emotional eating - question from our last live session!

If you've ever found yourself reaching for chocolate after a stressful day, craving crisps during periods of overwhelm, or feeling calmer after eating a favourite meal, you're far from alone.

One of the questions we were asked during our live session was:

"Why is it always food? Why do we comfort ourselves with eating?"

The answer lies in an intricate interaction between our brain, nervous system, learning, memory, hormones and emotions.

Comfort eating isn't a lack of willpower.

It's a behaviour that has developed through thousands of years of evolution and a lifetime of personal experience.

Food is rewarding because it keeps us alive

From an evolutionary perspective, eating isn't simply pleasurable.

It's essential for survival.

Our brains therefore evolved powerful reward systems that encourage us to seek food.

When we eat—particularly foods that are highly palatable, combining fat, carbohydrate, sweetness or salt—the brain releases dopamine within the mesolimbic reward pathway.

This pathway includes structures such as:

  • the ventral tegmental area (VTA)

  • the nucleus accumbens

  • the prefrontal cortex

  • the amygdala

Rather than being the brain's "pleasure chemical", dopamine is more accurately described as a chemical involved in motivation, learning and reinforcement.

It teaches the brain:

"Remember this. It helped."

Over time, this strengthens the likelihood that we'll repeat the behaviour.

Dopamine isn't about pleasure

One of the biggest misconceptions is that dopamine simply makes us feel good.

In reality, dopamine is heavily involved in wanting rather than liking.

Research suggests dopamine helps assign "incentive salience"—essentially making something feel important or worth pursuing.

If eating chocolate repeatedly coincides with stress relief, your brain learns that chocolate predicts emotional relief.

Eventually, the cue itself (opening the cupboard, finishing work, feeling anxious) can trigger dopamine release before you've even eaten.

This is one reason habits become so automatic.

Food also reduces stress

Eating doesn't just activate reward circuits.

It also appears to dampen activity within the body's stress systems.

Stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, increasing cortisol production.

Highly palatable foods may temporarily reduce this stress response through interactions between dopamine, endogenous opioids and other neurochemical pathways.

Many people experience feeling calmer after eating.

That's because, biologically speaking, they often do.

The difficulty is that this relief tends to be temporary.

If food becomes the primary strategy for managing difficult emotions, the cycle can repeat.

Eating changes our attention

Another fascinating reason food becomes comforting is attentional narrowing.

When we're eating, particularly something enjoyable, our brain allocates more cognitive resources towards sensory processing:

  • taste

  • smell

  • texture

  • chewing

  • swallowing

This temporarily shifts attention away from distressing thoughts.

It's similar to why colouring books, knitting or gardening can feel calming, they anchor us in the present moment.

Food simply happens to be one of the most powerful sensory experiences available.

Food is also deeply emotional

The emotional meaning of food begins long before adulthood.

Food accompanies many of life's most important experiences:

  • birthdays

  • Christmas

  • celebrations

  • family dinners

  • holidays

  • being looked after when ill

These repeated experiences create strong associative memories.

The amygdala (emotion) and hippocampus (memory) help link particular foods with feelings of safety, warmth and connection.

So years later, eating those foods may genuinely recreate some of those emotional states.

Our brains love efficiency

From a neuroscience perspective, habits reduce cognitive effort.

Whenever a behaviour successfully solves a problem—even temporarily, the brain is more likely to automate it.

If food consistently helps:

  • reduce anxiety

  • distract from loneliness

  • relieve boredom

  • soften sadness

the brain learns:

"This works."

Importantly, the brain isn't asking whether it's the perfect solution.

It's asking whether it helped.

Why restriction often makes emotional eating worse

One reason emotional eating can intensify after dieting is that restriction increases both physiological and psychological drive towards food.

When we label foods as "bad", they often become more salient.

Combined with emotional vulnerability, this can create the familiar cycle:

Restriction → increased cravings → eating → guilt → more restriction.

Breaking this cycle isn't about becoming more disciplined.

It's about reducing food's emotional intensity and developing additional coping strategies alongside eating.

Food isn't the problem

Perhaps the most important message is this:

Comfort eating isn't evidence that you're weak.

It demonstrates that your brain has learned an efficient way to regulate emotion.

The goal of Food Freedom isn't to remove comfort from food.

It's to gradually expand your emotional toolkit, so food becomes one source of comfort among many, rather than the only one.
